Incredibly popular and never really dated in style, they claim a whole plethora of celebrity wearers, from James Bond to Prince William.
An Omega Seamaster typically has a stainless case and bracelet, a screw-in crown and caseback, engraved with the Omega hippocampus logo. Named Seamaster because Omega claim they are as much at home on sea as on land; they are up to 1200 meter water resistant.
Usually with phosphorescent hands and a moving unidirectional bezel, blue, black or silver dials with orange accents, and sapphire crystal anti reflective glass. This ‘standard’ seamaster is not all there is however; they now have so many varieties, sizes and colours. Golf specials, Bond specials, ladies sizes, diamond and bimetal. Yet the shape and style is instantly recognisable making it one of the worlds most popular Omega to date.
In the 70’s the watch took a much sportier direction and took on its famous diver oriented features, depth ratings, calibrated rotating bezels, extra high visibility dials and chronograph functions.
OMEGA Speedmaster {ref 105.012} was designed by NASA as the standard watch for all Apollo missions, and its appearance has stayed almost identical over half a century later.
Of course James Bond has famously sported an Omega seamaster Professional, since 1995’s Goldeneye, causing many limited edition and special Bond versions to be created.
Up until recently all Seamster Pro models sported a wave pattern on the dial. This was far less distracting than most photos would have you believe. Seamster Professionals were introduced in 1994, and have a water resistance rating to 300m.
The Seamster Planet Ocean was a version introduced in 2004. its a chunky version ‘beefed up’ case to enable the watch to go even deeper, with a water resistance rating of 600metres. Until 2012 the Pro model was only offered with a black dial. Now a blue or white option has been added. Its offered in sizes 42mm wide, 45.5mm wide to the largest at 46mm. There is a rare 37.5mm ladies option recently introduced.
Seamaster Aqua Terra, introduced in 2003. All models are water rated to 150metre, and most models have a shot production lifespan of 1-5 years, much shorter than the production span of most other Omega models.
Seamasters most unusual version is the Ploprof 1200m a large and striking watch, a reincarnation of a cult favourite 1970s divers model. These are a ‘marmite’ watch, with people either loving the chunky co-axial, or hating the bulk.
Omega count four of their five best selling watches from the Seamster range, {- the fifth being a speedmaster} and can list numerous Movies and TV shows, sport events and sponsorship deals showcasing Omega Seamasters.
