Sunshine has arrived and the summer is just about here. You're busy booking that all important trip to the beach and sun. But what about your watch? Taking it with you? leaving it at home?
Taking a luxury watch on holiday - there are a few things to consider.
Airport Security & Travel
Watches are safe to wear through airport scanners in the UK—there’s no risk of damage to the watch from security equipment. However, you may still be asked to remove your watch depending on the airport or how sensitive the detector is.
Some travellers choose to take it off in advance, while others wait to be asked—both are completely normal. If you do remove it, make sure to place it securely in a tray and keep it in sight at all times.

Hot Weather & Your Watch
Heat itself isn’t usually a problem—but:
- Extreme temperatures can affect oils inside the movement
- Rapid temperature changes (air con ↔ heat) aren’t ideal
- Dials and strap may fade if left in the sun.
Modern watches are built to handle everyday conditions, but it’s worth being mindful.
Water & Swimming
Not all watches are as water-resistant as people assume.
Before swimming:
- Check the water resistance rating
- Avoid using pushers underwater
- Saltwater can cause wear over time

Theft & Safety
This is the biggest risk when travelling.
Luxury watches can attract attention in busy tourist areas.
Consider:
- Wearing something more discreet
- Keeping high-value pieces in a hotel safe
- Insuring valuable watches before travel - making sure your holiday insurance covers your watch, or your specific watch insurance covers travel to where you are going.
Should You Take It At All?
Ask yourself:
- Would you be comfortable losing it?
- Do you really need to wear it?
There is no right answer; for some, the answer is yes. For others, it’s safer to leave it at home.
