The Rolex Submariner

Further to the news Rolex is still holding off any new models this year due to Covid, we take a good look back at one of Rolex’s best sellers instead.

There is no doubt about it; Rolex is the name when it comes to luxury watches. They are the brand with the most passionate fans and collectors, and the biggest name everyone turns out to see at Basel.

Currently in stock right now at Watch Buyers we have the Rolex Submariner in blue, black and green.

The Rolex Submariner was a turning point in diver’s watches when first created in 1953 and then launched in 1954. The standard of water and corrosion resistance was previously not matched, nor did anyone think of wearing a sports watch full time. It changed how people thought of diver’s watches - and sports watches generally.

The very first model with Submariner on the dial.

Todays Rolex Submariners are water resistant up to 300 metres (1000 ft) Easily read under water with clear bright luminescent hour markers and a large unidirectional bezel.

Despite being so very good at their intended job its fair to say most Rolex Submariners never go diving, or indeed under deep water.

The Rolex Submariner has appeared in several James Bond movies; Dr No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball to name a few. Timothy Dalton was the last Bond to wear a submariner, from Golden Eye onwards Bond is seen in Omega Seamasters.

In 2003- 2010 the 50th anniversary model was available. The Rolex Submariner-Date anniversary edition (16610 LV), with distinguishing features such as the green bezel which gives it the nickname ‘The Kermit’

There was a red triangle at the 12 o'Clock on the bezel on and off for the first eight years of submariner models.

It took sixteen years before the Submariner got its date complication at three o’clock! Two years after the Rolex Sea dweller did.
