Tag Heuer Grand Carrera 17 RS CAV511A VS Non Grand Carrera CV2010

The updated TAG Heuer Grand Carrera range was launched in 2007 and it was designed to pay homage to the brand's unique motorracing legacy. The collection was created to reinterpret the classic Grand Carrera range of watches that was launched in 1964, and it encapsulates years of research displayed in the most stylish and effortless time pieces. The Swiss brand has created a selection of styles in the Carrera range, and here we look at what makes the Grand Carrera 17 RS CAV511A different to the CV2010. Tag Heuer Grand Carrera 17 RS CAV511A

Subtle Differences

There are several differences between the Grand Carrera 17 RS CAV511A and the CV2010, the most noticeable being the 43mm dial featured by the CAV511A against the smallerdiameter dial of the CV2010, which measures at 41mm. These 2 mm make a considerable difference and the face of the CV2010 is thus somewhat smaller and more compact. There are significant differences in the style of each face, and the CV2010 features a more classic design, whereas the CAV511A is sportier. The CV2010 boasts a hightech calibre 16 automatic movement that powers the watches chronograph functions, and the seconds, minutes and hours hand movements are all connected via this automated feature. In the CAV511A the TAG Heuer Rotating System has replaced traditional hands with dashboard style discs, bringing the link with motor racing even closer. The rotating system was inspired by GT racing car engine design and adds a more modern element to the time piece. Readability has been optimised in these dials and effortless elegance is maintained across the design. A permanent seconds hand is also featured and powered in the same manner.

Racing Style and Sophistication

Non Grand Carrera CV2010 Both watches have been designed with a sportier look in mind, and although the CV2010 boasts the extremely precise automated chronograph movement, both watches are considered to be hugely reliable. They both feature a tachymeter scale on the bezel which gives average speed measurement, and on the CV2010 an open flange design makes for easy readability of seconds. On both watches a sapphire crystal is fitted into the case back to reveal the movement. The CAV511A is also the more gem laden time piece as it features 37 rubies, whilst the CV2010 only boasts 25, and this could be why the latter is cheaper as it retails for an estimated $4350, whereas the more ruby laden watch has a much higher price tag of around $8500. The design of each watch differs slightly, with the CAV511A case available in brushed or polished steel and the CV2010 only released in a polished version. The bezel on the CAV511A is also made of brushed or polished steel and the dial is black with a spiral design, in contrast to the CV2010’s black aluminium bezel and black brushed steel dial. Overall, it’s clear that the watches, although from the same range, have their own unique features. As the more expensive one, the Grand Carrera 17 RS CAV511A could be considered the rarer or more valuable. Both watches are intended for everyday wear and offer a water resistance of up to 100m, ensuring that they are safe to use for most sporting activities. It’s clear that each watch in the Carrera range has been created to TAG Heuer‘s exacting standards and the precision and craftsmanship is evident in each piece.
