Seeing Double, when two watches are better than one

Seeing Double, when two watches are better than one

It's causing a stir in the media, there’s no doubt it a ‘thing’ now and we really aren't sure about it here at Watch Buyers - what are we talking about? The art of a double watch wearing. Yes that’s right ‘Double Wristing', as it’s being called, is the wearing of two watches at once.

Normally we pick one watch to wear at all times, or one for during the day, switching for something flashy at night. One for work, one for extreme outdoor hobbies, right? Like a breaking of some unspoken taboo, two at once is surely a step too far?

Not so say more and more people. With the rise of smart watches, the double-wristing trend has only gathered momentum.

The smart watch meant a choice between your beautiful, classic, luxury watch and the one that told your daily steps, heralded your email notifications and took your heart rate. Modern or classic? Form over function? Head or heart?

People began to not chose, but to wear both.

And not just the 'Apple with the Rolex' choice either - more and more people are also wearing TWO classic luxury timepieces. Struggling, perhaps, with the choice in the morning of which of their collection to wear, they wear two.

Tho is dubbed a trend now, it actually had its predecessors;

Such as the American General Norman Schwarzkopf, who wore two watches during the 1991 Gulf war —completely for practical reasons. He had one set to show the local time in Saudi Arabia and the other the time in Washington, USA. Yes; he could have used a Rolex GMT or similar, but no doubt he found this so much quicker to see in a glance.

There’s a photograph of Fidel Castro wearing two Rolex watches at once, as he sits in the Kremlin talking with Khrushchev. By using the double time zone on one of those watch he had three times zones on his wrist  - Havana, Washington, and Moscow.

There’s a picture of Princess Diana wearing two watches. One slim gold, one leather strapped larger face. She wasn’t however starting a trend, or making a fashion statement. She was, rather charmingly, looking after Prince Charles’ watch during a polo match.

Fast forward to 2019 when actor Chris Pratt appeared on Jimmy Kimmel’s TV show. He wore two watches, one on each wrist. It appeared he wearing two robust, slightly different Calibre de Cartier watches. The TV host never asked him about it, but social media went wild.

Amongst the growing number of perfectly ‘normal/average’ people choosing to wear two watches at once the superstars and music moguls are doing it too. Like Billie Eiilsh, the music star is frequently seen with a watch on both wrists, or two watches on one wrist.

Rapper Travis Scott is a fan of dripping in diamonds - and wearing diamond Rolex and18 karat Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is quite the norm with him.

So are you a convert? Is it excessive or iconic? Fashion goes crazy or actually really useful?

As watch enthusiasts here at Watch Buyers, we make no judgement on your choice to wear as many watches as you like! We only point out we are not so comfortable with two watches on the same wrist - the idea of them chipping and rubbing together, all day, everyday, makes us cringe at the damage it could do to each watch. One on each wrist might be a safer option.
