The Rolex Cellini 50509 is an elegant piece and one that continues to make use of Rolex’s ability to craft subtle and understated timepieces. Whilst it follows many of it’s stablemates in this regard, it is actually quite different in terms of appearance, with a design that harks back to Rolex’s of the 40s and 50s.
As a result, this timepiece is of course an extremely collectible piece; perhaps more so than classics such as the Daytona and Explorer.
Rolex Cellini Family
The face of the Cellini (Reference 50509) is exceptionally clean. The name Cellini references the family of a watches. The 50509 has an extremely dressy appearance that lends this watch more of a boardroom feel - the entire Cellini family echo this idea. The 50509 keeps things understated. The face of this watch has no day or date marker. This may sound surprising, but it lends the watch an extremely unique look. It’s initially very striking and lends it a great deal of appeal.
As with all Rolex watches, style is at the heart of what this watch is all about. The inner workings of the watch comprise of a self-winding mechanical movement with a 48-hour power reserve. This movement oscillates at 28,800 beats/hour. Of course, this movement is COSC-certified with chronometre status.
The case of the Cellini measures at 39mm and is available in either 18 carat white gold or Everose gold. The bezel is domed and fluted, and all of this is done with the purpose of creating a smarter, sleeker timepiece. The domed bezel ensures the watch catches the light when under a crisp white cuff. It’s part of a dressier, more formal take on the Rolex. This care and attention is what keeps many coming back to Rolex again and again; very few watch manufacturers design pieces so completely and so thoroughly.
Rolex Style
You can certainly never accuse a Rolex watch of not being stylish, but the clear focus with the Cellini family is to create something best suited to a formal environment. Despite being what is a fairly subtle timepiece, there are other typical Rolex flares that set this watch apart from its competitors.
The hour and minute hands are distinctively shaped like double-edged swords, a slight juxtaposition on the delicate design of the rest of the piece. This is a gorgeous little touch, and the 50509 really stands apart from the smooth, white face. The hand’s darkened colour highlights their shape and makes this an extremely legible watch in any conditions. Large numerals sit at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 positions with second demarcations placed around the watch face.
The familiar Rolex crown is nestled proudly just underneath the 12 numeral, and emblazoned under this is the Rolex name. It’s a deft touch that doesn’t leap out at you, but it’s also never lost in the overall design of the watch; a demonstration of Rolex’s ability to design for any environment.
Many Rolex aficionados view this watch as a second or third Rolex due it’s dressier nature. Whilst filling a void in the Rolex stable, it is not typically viewed as an entry-level piece. There’s nothing stopping anyone from using it as a so, but as a departure from traditional Rolex appearances. It harkens back to a glamourous and glitzy era, but it does so with a modern twist - and we love it.
