Montblanc Silence Smartwatch Fears With ‘Smart Strap'

The introduction of Apple's iWatch marked a groundbreaking shift in the global watch industry, intertwining smart technology and horology for the first time. For luxury watchmakers, this game-changing development was initially viewed with caution, and a certain amount of fear that Apple's new offering might shake up the watch market forever. Although Apple's iWatch has a considerable market reach in terms of every day wearability and desirability, horology experts all agree that it lacks the timeless, classic appeal inherent in luxury watches. This is now set to change, however.

Montblanc's e-Strap

Upmarket watch maker Montblanc has reacted to the introduction of smart technology to the watchmaking industry, and has created its own e-Strap, or smart strap. The TimeWalker Urban Speed e-Strap differs from Apple's iWatch in that it has the ability to use smart technology whilst still maintaining the intricate features, mechanisms and characteristics of a luxury watch - allowing high-end users to appreciate both new technology and the bespoke appeal of a classic timepiece.

How the e-Strap Works

The innovative invention from Montblanc uses an interchangeable strap that attaches to the watch. The strap is essentially the 'brains' of the smart technology and communicates a wide range of features to the wearer, so that they do not have to keep checking their phone. Using Bluetooth technology, the e-Strap is able to connect to both Android and iOS smartphones.

Features and Functions

The e-Strap is able to alert the wearer of any incoming notifications via small vibrations. A screen on the underside of the strap displays information. There is an activity tracker function that has the ability to alert the wearer if they have remained inactive for a long period of time. A hand remote-control feature on the strap means the wearer can operate the camera on their smartphone, setting their phone up to take endless numbers of selfie photos. The strap also includes Find-Me functions. Wearers can check emails and social media from the watch, as well as monitor phone calls and request appointment reminders. The electronic components sit in a gasket-sealed steel case, and the strap features a carbon treated leather band that resists abrasion and is resistant to water, fire and heat.

How the e-Strap Differs from the iWatch

Montblanc goes down a different route with is pioneering e-Strap in comparison to the likes of Apple's iWatch. What makes it stand out is that the smart technology is placed on the underside of the strap so that the intricate mechanical engineering of the timepiece is what still takes precedence.

The Future of Smart Watch Technology

The iWatch is already out there, and Montblanc's e-Strap is said to be hitting stores in June, so does this mean that other watchmakers will jump on the bandwagon and develop their own wearable smart-timepieces? And how will this affect the high-end horology industry? It is almost certainly likely that other brands will start considering this new technology. Rumours are already rife that LVMH is showing an interest in this area. Whilst nothing has been confirmed, LVMH has already earmarked its Tag Heuer brand as the most likely candidate for the inclusion of smart technology, should it decide to go down that route in the future. Some top-end brands are fearful that this new technology could take away first-time buyers of luxury timepieces from the market, but time will tell. For anyone wanting the convenience of integrated technology with an intricate mechanical timepiece, however, then the recent developments will certainly prove of much interest.
