Is bigger really better?

Not that long ago as technology took off and the whole world got into super smart phones that did - and still do, everything, men got really into watches. A huge revival, and a brilliant unexpected market boost, as despite your phone being able to tell you the precise time in over 500 countries we showed we like tradition, we like classy and we love our luxury real watches.  For awhile the bigger your watch dial the better. Your wrist had to shout about it. Now however we see a swing towards less is more, subtle watch sizes that you can wear with anything and that will never go out of fashion.  Basel world keeps showing us smaller and smaller timepieces, often it takes a while to filter down to the general public market but Basel say ‘The status-symbol watch is shrinking, to 38 millimetres or less. It's a size that celebrates subtlety over flash but doesn't sacrifice proper watchmaking skills’   Quite possibly as you get older you are a) going to ignore the 'fashion' and buy whatever you like, and b) maybe going to need that bigger dial to actually see the time, but yes; the watch makers are indeed catering to this trend towards somewhat smaller watches. And bringing out more and more under 40mm. They tell us that some buyers say colossal chronographs and daunting dive watches are starting to look tired.  Take a look at these small compact beauties and see what you think - Not only is Piaget's Altiplano the thinnest watch around, it's also the most compact when you opt for the 34mm model.
