Hublot Spirit of Big Bang Titanium (601.NX.0173.LR)

The Big Bang style of watch quickly became one of Hublot’s most instantly recognisable watches. It possessed the chunky and striking round case that allowed it to stand out on the wearer’s wrist.

The Spirit of Big Bang deviates from this tested method slightly, adopting a barrel-style shape. This change in case shape does not sacrifice any of the chunkiness that accounted for so much of the appeal of its forebear.

One feature that is immediately noticeable with the Spirit of Big Bang is the inner workings of its HUB4700 calibre with a power reserve of approximately 50 hours. As a member of the LMVH group, Hublot bases this movement on the Zenith El Primero movement; a movement that is massively desirable. Many collectors of Zenith watches regard this as the finest movement available, and as such it is no surprise Hublot have chosen to expose it on this model. Given a complete Hublot look, the movement beats at 36,000vb/h.

The caseback offers another window into the inner workings of the watch, with a skeletonised rotor offering a tasteful view. The caseback is very simple; Hublot are Spirit of Big Bang are inscribed subtly around the edges. This adds a sophisticated touch and makes sure nothing is taken away from the exceptional movement.

Unique Touches

You can see the entirety of the date wheel, which is extremely unique. At the 4:30 position lies a clearly marked box signifying the date. Great care has been taken to ensure the watch remains legible, despite revealing so much of its complex inner workings.

The case itself possesses the dimensions of 51mmx45mm and is fitted with a sapphire dial. The sapphire crystal has also been given an anti-reflective treatment, ensuring views of the inner workings are not obscured by glistening light.

The six screws around the bezel are ‘H’-shaped - a wonderful touch that further displays Hublot’s commitment to creating the perfect watch. Rubber accents around the outside blend seamlessly, and the strap is colour co-ordinated with these. Hublot are renowned for integrating a wide variety of materials into one package.

If you’re new to Hublot watches, you may be concerned with wrist presence. The barrel design of the Spirit of Big Bang (as opposed to the round case of it’s Big Bang family members) allows for a slightly curved shape. This means the watch sits slightly lower on the wrist; something that may be worth keeping in mind if you’ve not worn a watch of Hublot’s distinctive style before.
