Luxury watches, including top brand Rolex, are among the most counterfeited items in the world. Whether you’re buying your first Rolex or adding to a collection, it’s vital to know how to spot a fake. At WatchBuyers.co.uk, we regularly authenticate timepieces, and we’ve put together this simple guide to help you make an informed purchase.
1. Weight and Build Quality
A genuine Rolex is made from high-grade metals such as 904L stainless steel, gold, or platinum — all of which are heavier than cheaper alternatives used in fakes. If the watch feels light or flimsy, it's a red flag. Real Rolexes also have a solid, smooth feel with precise finishing and no rough edges.

2. Movement and Second Hand Sweep
Rolex uses mechanical movements known for their smooth, sweeping second hand. While not completely fluid (typically 8 ticks per second), the motion should appear continuous. If the second hand ticks once per second or stutters, it’s likely a quartz movement — a warning sign the watch may be a fake.
3. Engravings and Markings
Check the case back and inside the clasp for sharp, clean engravings. Genuine Rolex markings are finely etched, never printed or stamped. Many models also have a laser-etched crown logo at the 6 o’clock position on the crystal — difficult to see without magnification but present on authentic pieces.

4. Cyclops Lens Magnification
Rolex’s date display includes a Cyclops lens which magnifies the date by x 2.5. On many fakes, the lens offers little or no magnification, or the date appears distorted or misaligned with the 'bubble'.
5. Serial and Model Numbers
Rolex engraves serial and model numbers between the lugs or on the inner bezel (Rehaut) depending on the model. These should be finely etched and easy to read under magnification. If they look sandblasted or poorly done, its another red flag.

6. Price That’s Too Good to Be True
A genuine Rolex always holds value. If a deal seems suspiciously cheap, especially from a private seller or online auction, approach with caution. Always research the market value for the specific model and year before purchasing. Whilst there are 'good buys' there are never 'bargain Rolex'.
7. Buy from Trusted Sources
Some fakes still cost the con artist thousands to make in order to convince you they are genuine. Some fakes are so incredible even an expert would have to study it in order to be sure. The best way to avoid fakes is to buy from a reputable dealer. At WatchBuyers.co.uk, we only buy and sell genuine luxury watches, and every piece is thoroughly checked by our watch specialists.
