A. Lange & Sohne. Right back in 1830 a 15 year old Ferdinand A. Lange attended Dresden’s technical University. There he took interest in, and showed great promise at, the then unusual skills of watchmaking. As the railways around there grew and the need for great time precision grew, A.lange & sohne’s family of pocket watches became in demand. Lange_Glashuette_Ankeruhrwerk_63354 These pocket watches had an outer ‘chapter ring’ on the dial - a feature still often seen on watches today.The ring is two parallel lines with small lines across - this was based on the railway lines, with the minute hand moving from one railway sleeper to the next, as it were. He went into considerable personal debt in attempting to get his watch making going, he never gave up and his perseverance paid off. He was devoted to improving the current watch design and gears. And became know for pioneering several  important watch making features. Thanks to him bringing business and work to a poor mountain town he became mayor for 18 years. He died in 1871 and his two sons took over. They were both excellent watch makers and business men. By the 19th century A. Lange & Sohne were developing timepieces for South Pole expeditions, Aviation pioneer Zeppelin, with chronometers and observation watches. The company suffered major hard times and it was almost 150 years after his great grandfather had began that A. Lange’s 66 year old great grandson began to manufacture again.
