The Breitling Navitimer is one of the world's most iconic watches and an instantly recognisable timepiece. The aesthetics have been refined over time - the already exquisite design and intricate dial was enhanced with an automated chronograph in 1969. This watch is particularly collectable, enjoying the status of 'Grande Complication Navitimer'. Its name is based on the fact it uses a ‘1461 time period’.
The movements
The movements differ from other models in the range. The Breitling Navitimer has a B19 self-wind mechanism, which includes a calendar so accurate that it only needs to be corrected on leap years. This mechanism is certified against the COCS Chronometre and uses a modified Swiss ETA 2982 automated base. The movements are highly sophisticated, with each watch being made of 450 different parts. The calendar function presents the days of the week in French, and there is a moon phase indicator and annual calendar. The moon indicator is a particularly enticing feature for collectors, offering something a little different from the majority of luxury timepieces. Each of the sub dials also acts as a calendar display. There is a power reserve of 42 hours.
The aesthetic appeal
In terms of aesthetics, the dial offers the visual 'busyness' that is associated with the Navitimer range. However, this edition is recognisable for having a moon phase on its front. The blue dial is a gorgeous shade, which is matched perfectly with the alligator strap and offers a high level of contrast to aid legibility. The dial is presented in steel and metallic blue which is very easy on the eyes. The bold blue finish - both on the alligator strap and the dial - is a release feature for 2013 and allows the watch to combine its high-end craftsmanship and design credentials with a contemporary and fresh finish that is likely to appeal to younger buyers in particular. The blue feature shade is complemented by red markings on the dial and the coloured alligator strap is just one option; a more classic steel metal bracelet is also available.
The watch case is slightly larger than most timepieces at 46 mm in width, including most Navitimer watch models. It has a beautiful highly polished presentation, with double-coated AR sapphire crystals. The case itself is water resistant to a depth of 30 metres, which is consistent with the Navitimer range.
This is a Limited Edition piece with just 1,000 Breitling Navitimers made with expanded slide rule bezels and dial layouts. The limited edition nature is typical of other releases from the Breitling Navitimer brand and demonstrates the craftsmanship involved in the creation of such a piece.
This timepiece is already a classic and beloved by collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.
