A to Z of Watches & Timepiece Terminology - Q & R

Q

Quarter repeater - This is a form of repeater that chimes the hours and quarter hours at differently pitched tones.

Quartz crisis - A fascinating period in watch history; the quartz crisis is the name given to an economic crisis in the 1970s and 1980s, which led many German and Swiss watch manufacturers to financial ruin. Cheap Japanese quartz watches conquered the watch market, many traditional watch manufacturers had to file for bankruptcy.

R

Rehaut - A rehaut (also sometimes called flange) describes the inner watch ring that is raised above a flat dial. The rehaut is often an almost secretly pretty part of the watch, adorned with engravings, scales or other decorations.

Repeater - This is a complication that enables an acoustic sound in a watch, using a chime spring. A different tone is used for each minute and hour. This mechanism requires a repeater striking mechanism and is considered one of the most complex complications.

Rhodium-plated -If a dial is rhodium-plated, it is covered with a very thin layer of rhodium. Rhodium is known by its cool, bright and slightly bluish shimmer.

Richard Mille - Swiss watch company founded in 2001 by Dominique Guenat and Richard Mille. At the age of fifty, Richard Mille decided to create his own contemporary brand. The brand specialises in meticulously made but very high-priced watches.

Rolex - as if the worlds most famous luxury watch brand needs any introduction! It was a British founded watch designer and manufacturer in 1905. After the WWII they moved the company from London to Geneva. Each Rolex comes with a unique serial number, which can help indicate its approximate production period. They used to be numbered in order, but now are randomly selected serial numbers to help prevent fraud. There is nothing quite like a Rolex and certainly they always provoke a very 'marmite reaction' from watch collectors!
